I have heard that you should leave your PC on, that just seems strange to me
so I don't do it. So I always turn it off when I am done, I could turn it on and off 2 - 3 times a day, but then I was told that all of this "cold" booting could damage the computer. What about hibernating or sleeping, is this better. Maybe all of this is BS and it doesn't even matter. Thanks for any input. KOH. |

I always use Hibernate.
It actually puts the computer off, after saving all memory contents in a file. Then it will restart very fast, with all opened applications or documents restoredé "KingOfHearts" <raoh99@hotmail.com> a écrit dans le message de news: 14Odnc3uj_imH-LeRVn-rw@adelphia.com... >I have heard that you should leave your PC on, that just seems strange to >me so I don't do it. > So I always turn it off when I am done, I could turn it on and off 2 - 3 > times a day, but then I was told that all of this "cold" > booting could damage the computer. I would leave it on all day turn it off at night in your situation. Put it in Standby when you're away from your computer. Cody |

I've seen this debated many times over the years in many places. Usually winds up in a ~50/50 result. Pick what's best for you and do that. To help add to your befuddlement, from a power usage/cold start point of view, hibernate *is* off. Different levels of standby are varying degrees of on. When you place a computer in hibernate or sleep state 3, it is the same as
turning the computer off - as far as the components cooling down. The point here is the thermal stress on components (expansion/contraction). If a computer is turned on, and left on, the internals reach a state of equilibrium. When a computer is allowed to cool off things will contract (such as solder connections on a mother board). This can, over time, cause a "loose" solder connection and be a big problem. Notice that I said "can" - not will! That being said, the problem is nowhere near as prevalent as it was when I was repairing T.V.'s in the 60's. Back then, it was THE major problem! I could spend half an hour on every T.V. over one year old, resoldering connections on the circuit boards. Today's soldering techniques have pretty much minimized, if not eliminated, the problem. -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User Quote from George Ankner: If you knew as much as you think you know, You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew!
