i am using xp pro sp2 mobo asus a7v333 (raid - but raid function is not
used) parallel ata controllers.

recently i added 160 gb hdd. ntfs formatted with partition magic. hdd is
seen by mobo bios but not seen by windows after booting. when i put this 160
gb in usb 2.0 external enclosure and connected it to my mobo usb 2.0 port -
windows recognised it. when i put it back in again (doesn't matter which
controllers/ata cables) windows would not recognise the drive.

just in case it is drive/cable specific, borrowed my friend 200 gb hdd and
his ata cables - similar results: recognised at bios level but not by windows
when it is inside but recognised when it is connected via external usb 2.0
enclosure.

just in case it is mobo firmware issue - checked with asus site to make sure
mobo firmware is up to date - it is.

i want this drive to be an internal drive. would appreciate advice/help as
to what is going on here and any solution to this.

Are you using it on the same controller/cable as HD-1? Jumpered a
Master/Slave/Cable Select?

If you use it on the secondary controller is this controller enabled
in the BIOS and/or in Windows? Check Device manager.

Can you connect a CD/DVD drive to this controller and does that work?

You may not use thr drive in a RAID configuration but if it is
connected to the RAID controller check whether this is enabled in the
BIOS and whether the required driver is installed for this controller
in Windows.

i should have clarified that i've tried different controllers/cables -
adjusting the jumpers accordingly using both my hdd as well as my friend's.

yes, i have working dvdrw connected and even subsituting to this controller,
hdd would not be recognised by xp pro.

yes, i have the raid controller enabled since all the other hdd's/dvdrw on
the controller works, admittedly all are <= 120 gb.

i know what you meant by disk management - cmd that you launch from run...
but i do not know how to use this or how to format using xp. for as long as i
can remember, i have always rely on PM to format ntfs & manipulate my
partitions without problem, again all hdd's <= 120 gb.

i don't think formatting is the problem since:

BIOS recognised the 160 gb and 200 gb hdd as does wxp when i put it in an
external enclosure usb 2.0 but just not internally.

thereofore, i would again appreciate help and advise as to what could be the
problem and solution if there's any.
