You need a router to share the internet connection.
I would recommend Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router, which goes for $55 - $15 rebate now. This way you can share the connection between 4 computers max. Connect your notebook wirelessly and the desktop throu the included cable. Just a small note:
you don't nave to buy a wireless card for the desktop (another $50) and can connect the desktop using the included cable. Pros: more robust and fast connection Cons: cable vs. wireless "BigJIm" <woody10277@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:ZpednQUkd4G9yx7enZ2dnUVZ_sGdnZ2d@comcast.com. .. > yes you need a wireless router you will also need a wireless pci card for > your desktop. > when setting the router you will need to read the instructions how to set > up for connection > should take about 15 minutes. > "dan" <someone@cox.net> wrote in message > news:v2Igf.1837$Wu.137@fed1read05... >> >> Have a laptop that is set up for wireless. >> Am on a cable connection on my desktop and would like to set it up so I >> can use my internet connection for both. >> Went to Compusa and Best Buy and got different stories on what I need and >> how to do it. I just found your note. I have done the same network at home. All you need is a Wireless router (you have to decide if you want G or B) G or extreme is faster but a waste if your notebook is not WIFI G ready if you have an older PCMCIA B card just get a B wireless router from DLINK or LYNKSYS etc. any PCs can be hard wired with ethernet cables so you can simply put the router between your cable modem and the PC's. Read the instructions on setting up your wireless. It should be relatively simple out of the box to get working. The notebook should find the "available networks" your router will have a default SSID usually the name of the make DLINK or LINKSYS. Once you get the wireless network working you may want the then investigatge securing the site with WEP 64bit or 128 bit encryption. This stops neighbors or drive by access from roaming WIFI users. You need to setup a shared passkey or type in a HEX code to then connect. It is easier than it sounds and plenty of online resources to help you. -- GameMaker |
