What exactly is ahppenning when you try to hibernate? Does the 'standby' button change to hibernate when you press the Shift key and howver the mouse over the standby button?

You have hibernate enabled. You have it configured to activate after an
hour of inactivity. So does your system go inactive for an hour? What
happens when YOU choose to go into Hibernate mode? Is the problem that your
computer goes into Hibernate mode and then comes out to power back up (maybe
because you have events defined in Task Scheduler or in BIOS or wakeup)?

something that definitely causes hibernate not to work is the presence of Adobe Type Manager. Apparently this is because ATM binds to the Windows XP kernal and blocks some of the advanced power management features from working. In the unlikely event that Adobe TM is installed remove it and all will be well. XP supports type 1 fonts by default so ATM's only use is as a font manager-Adobe in fact recomment Extensis Suitcase for use with XP.

Hello John.

I guess i should have been more specific about describing this problem.

My computer does not hibernate "automatically" after an hour. I don't have a problem putting it into hibernation using the shutdown menu.

Thanks for your reply.

Hello.

No, my system does not go inactive for an hour. That's the problem. With
those settings, isn't it supposed hibernate automatically after one hour of
inactivity ?

Thanks,
Tony

Yep, after 1 hour of inactivity the system should power down into hibernate
mode. But you just said that your computer never goes inactive for an hour.

I guess i misunderstood your question. >>So does your system go inactive
for an hour?<<

I have my system set to hibernate after 1 hour. If i let the computer sit
with nothing running on it , not even an open idle window, for hours, it
never hibernates automatically. It can hibernate if i use the shutdown menu
and select hibernate from the dropdown list.

Thanks,
Tony

This would be caused by the computer not truly being inactive. You will
need to determine the cause of the inactivity. It may be software
running in the background causing the activity or it may be hardware
receiving input creating the activity. Either way if the timer does not
make it to the 1 hour point you won't get hibernate. Frequently people
can find that at 5 min it works but 15 won't, or the wireless mouse is
picking up interference. You will need to access the environment and the
software you have to determine the cause.
