I have an Asus laptop. Asus release a new version of its ATK0100 ACPI Utility
a few days ago, version 51. I upgraded from version 50. However, during
upgrade process, it failed and stated files were missing. I tried
uninstalling and installing the older version 50 with the same results. I
have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with virus scanners turned off, in
safe mode with no positive results. I have noticed a few weird peculiarities.

1) If I install version 51, the new hardware found message appears when I
reboot. If I look at device manager prior to cancelling this window, it seems
fine. When I cancel the new hardware found window, a yellow appostrophe
appears but the driver seems to work fine.

2) If I install version 50, the device in device manager has no yellow
appostrophe before or after I cancel the new hardware found message and seems
to work fine. The only gripe I have is the new hardware found window appears
when I boot up or look for new hardware eventhough the driver has been
installed.

I've tried checking the box, "do not prompt to install software again" but
new hardware found window still appears at every boot.

ACPI can be a realy bad thing to mess with. In the future I wouldnt update it
unless your having problems. Did the update ask you where to find the missing
files? If so, did you direct it into your system32\drivers directory? Every
once in a while XP will ask you for certain files while installing drivers.
These files are usualy already copied to your hard drive. You can find most
of them in the windows\system32\driver or windows\system32 directories. They
can also be in other locations. Like .hlp files are found in the windows\help
directory etc etc..

If the found new hardware pop up actualy does ask for files still then try
to locate the files. If it doesnt you may want to try and do a repair over
the top. Hopefuly your laptop came with a full version of XP. If it did and
its OEM then put in your CD drive and boot to it. It will detect that you
have an OS already. It will ask you if you want to do a "new install" or
"repair". Select "New install". The install will do some things and the look
at the hard drive again. When it does it will detect the old install and ask
one more time if you want to do a new install or a repair. Choose to do a
repair. If you get to the point where it wants you to select a hard drive
then something is wrong. Do not go any further or you may wipe your drive
with a new install.

The 2nd repair will reinstall all the old files from your original XP CD. It
should not effect the programs or users you have already installed. Just
incase you may want to do a backup. You never can be to careful. I havent had
a problem with is yet.

Once the repair is done the system will reboot and you will have to renter
your CD key and authenticate it. you will also have to redo any service packs
that you installed after getting the laptop.

If this doent fix the problem I would sugest you just wipe the drive and
reinstall unless you can live with the anoying pop up.
