Problem seeing full capacity of second hard drive

Hi

I have installed a second hard drive taken from my Tivo! it is a 40Gb
drive, but for some reason Disk Management only sees a 9Mb partition.

I have tried formatting it - it just formats the 9Mb
I have tried deleting the partition - it just shows 9Mb unallocated

I have a 3 year old HP Pavilion with XP home SP2.

I wouild be grateful for any help, thanks

might try to repartition it using fdisk from the command prompt.. make sure
you use this on the secondary drive as it will wipe out everything on the
drive selected..

Thanks jb, but my knowledge is limited. I can get to the command prompt but
I don't know anything about fdisk. Could you elaborate a bit please.

Forget about using the FDISK command, at least for the moment. There's no
reason why XP's Disk Management utility (which I assume you've used here,
right?) should be unable to partition & format a *normal* non-defective HD
to its full capacity.

First of all, are you certain you correctly connected & configured that 40
GB HD when you installed it in your machine? Is it jumpered correctly? Some
HDs come with a capacity-limiting jumper setting. Assuming that drive has
such a jumper, you're sure you didn't inadvertently set that jumper so as to
limit the effective capacity of the drive? I'm not familiar with the Tivo
HD - I'm assuming it's a standard-type of HD. Any idea of the manufacturer?
Have you checked with Tivo about this problem?

And you did use XP's Disk Management utility to partition & format that

Thanks for your reply, I was hoping you were about as I have read (and been
impressed by) some of your other posts. I will try to answer the points you
raised;

I am not entirely sure what jumpering is but I followed the guidance on the
HP website;

The HD model is a Quantum Fireball LCT 20 40

I am not sure about the capacity limiting, but it was using the full 40Gb
when it was in the Tivo and I made no changes to it wehen I removed it.

I think the Tivo is a standard HD, I have just replaced it with a Seagate
200Gb HD

Regarding using the XP Disk Management utility to partition & format the

I have seen under properties of the HD that the volume type is MASTER BOOT
RECORD whatever that means.

It's very difficult, if not impossible, for me to give you precise
directions on how to overcome this problem without having the machine in
front of me. However, I came across this website that contains detailed
information about configuring your Quantum Fireball HD. Hopefully, you'll be
able to understand the information given and hopefully, you'll be able to
use that information to overcome the problem.

Other than that I would think that your only other recourse at this point
would be to take the computer to a computer repair shop or have some
knowledgeable friend take a look at it.

P. S.
You mention that you've replaced this Tivo Quantum drive with a Seagate 200
GB HD. Was that to install in the Tivo machine or are you using the Seagate
in your computer in place of the Quantum?

I am getting to the bottom of the problem. It seems that the drive is
locked and needs to be unlocked:

"If your Quantum/Maxtor drive (some drives labeled as Maxtor may actually
have Quantum firmware) is locked (reporting as 9-10MB on boot up) then you
should unlock it now using your qunlock dos boot floppy (see step 4). Press
Ctrl-Alt-Del and wait for the 'No more processes ... ' to exit and power down
your PC. Place the qunlock dos boot disk in your floppy drive and then power
up your PC."

Although I am not exactly sure how to do it, I found some help on a Tivo
forum.

I might just give it a miss, it doesn't seem worth spending any more time or
effort on it now.

If you or anyone has a SIMPLE guide to unlocking my hd I would be really
grateful.
