Default Device Manager window blank?

I am trying to clean up a friends PC that is loaded with Spyware/adware
and wanted to connect to my home network. I didn't get anything when I ran
ipconfig /all in the command prompt so figured the network card wasn't
installed. Went to device manager and nothing shows up. It blank.

Anybody got a clue to this?

Danny

It sounds like the he had a bad virus or spyware attack. While it may be
possible to fix this I would highly recomend deleteing the partition and
starting over. If you want to try and fix it you could try to do a repair
over the top. This should reinstall the drivers. The only problem is that if
the virus or spyware is still there it will just take it back out.

If you dont know how to do a repair over the top then let us know.

Sounds like what is happening but the Plug and Play is in automatic and
started. Still a blank hardware window. There are no options available to
stop, start, etc so I put it in manual and am going to try and restart to
see if it turns it off. Then maybe if I restart it will work. I am
currently running Ad-Aware'
Any further help would be appreciated.

Ok Ad-Aware didn't find anything but I know there is adware/spyware on
it.
I finally booted in safe mode, logged in as Administrator and the Device
Manager shows everything. The Network card was disabled like I thought and
as soon as I enabled it and connected to the Internet to get updates I
started getting a few popups.
Still can't see anything in Device manager when logged in as the "Owner"
even though that account is listed as administrator. Any ideas?

We were having a rash of blank Device Managers a while back. It was
caused by the Apropos malware and this fix took care of it for a lot of
people:

Marvone if you want to try and do a repair over the top this is how its done.

1. Put your XP cd in and boot to it. (You may have to enter the BIOS and set
it to boot to the CD-Rom first.)

2. After a short while XP will see that you already have a install and ask
you if you want to do a repair or new install. Choose new install.

3. After a while XP will ask again if you want to do a repair or a new
install. Choose repair.

It will take off and reload all your old files from the CD. It should not
effect any of your data or profiles. You will however have to reload the
service packs that you installed after loading it originaly.

If the install gets to the point that it wants you to pick a partition to do
the install on you have gone to far. Do not pick one or you will create a new
install.

XP was preloaded on my Vaio when I bought it so all I have is 3 system
recovery disks. When I tried the first one it said the file txtsetup.exe was
missing?
