Hey, I recently installed a new Maxtor 200Gig hard drive as a slave to my
Maxtor 90 Gig drive. The Hard drive is on the device manager list, and is
said to be "working properly". Upon booting the PC I got the "new drive
found" message and then a second message confirming its instilation. When I
boot up it also appears in bios as a slave drive. The problem is that no
drive icon appears in the My Computer folder, and there is no way for me to
access the drive.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Because the new hard drives are not normally delivered
"partitioned"/"formatted".

Thank you! I am just formating it, I managed to assign the drive a
letter..the "layout" has automatically changed to "simple" and the "type" is
"basic". Is this okay? (btw, I couldnt see anything about partitioning). An
icon has appeared now the drive has a letter assigned, I will check if I can
access it after the format.

Go to Start, Run..., and run the following:
diskmgmt.msc
This allows you to partition and/or format the easiest way.
Also, you can change your drive letters. I prefer my hard drives are the
lower letters (C: & D and my CD/DVD drives after that (E: & F.

Every newly formatted hard drive should have CHKDSK /R ran (DOS Cmd prompt)
right after formatting and before putting data on it. This checks the entire
disk surface and marks off any bad spots.
Go to Start, Run, and type the following:
cmd
then in the command window, hitting ENTER after each line:
d:
chkdsk /r

A performance tip:
IF you use your paging file, the performance is usually better if you put it
on a hard drive where Windows and your programs aren't installed.
