Partitioning problem

A fried asked me to install a new 200GB Samsung SP2014N.
I installed it as slave to the existing 80GB HD (didn't look at mfg), booted
WinXPpro as usual, disk seen and and installed successfully.
Staed diskmgmt.msc. At that point the HD setup wizard buzzed into action,
which I didn't like, so I cancelled it.
Right click on disk1, create partition.....?.. NO. Of three rows of
choices, the first one (create partition) is grayed out?????????
And the Add disk wizard would only have created a DYNAMIC disk, which I of
priciple don't do.
Anybody have an idea why/what??


(Luckily I had prepared me with a BootItNG diskette, creating partitions
with that worhed flawlessly, and the partitions are seen and formatted by XP
ok.....)

you have to partition a drive then format it

There's nothing simpler than knowing how to work with the
command prompt. But for dumbed down Windows users, there is
Disk Manager. Actually, one needs to use the mouse to hit the
right box in order to: (a) create partition - Choose primary
or extended. Next, (b) click on the partition box to create
the logical drives, choose the drive letter, etc. And, as
noted, the HD setup wizard is useless except to signature
the disk.

Please enlighten us "dumbed down Windows users" as to exactly what "command
prompt" commands would one use with XP to install a disk?

I just had the exact same problem this weekend installing a 300gb drive,
"create partition" grayed out. I used the cd that came with the drive and
partitioned and formatted it NTFS. Worked like a champ. Don't know why
that happened as I've installed 2 120gb drives and a 160gb in the same
computer using Disk Management.

As I wrote, it is a Samsung SP2014N
Bought bulk, only thing provided with it is 4 screws...





But no problem, it's working as it should from day 1.. as I stated at the
end..
