Default CD-rw is not recognized as a recordable device

I followed the instructions on Q316529 on how to get XP to recognize my
drives. The drives that I have are Lite-ON (it came with my computer) and a
Sony DVD writer. XP is not recognizing either one as a recordable device. I
did try the Q316529 fix, but it did not work. Any other suggestion?

Thanks

Jim

What burning software do you use for both drives..?
Have you updated your burning app lately..?

I had a problem much like this, to fix it I went into the bio's and set the
type to No Drive it was set to Auto by default. I did not check to see if
setting it to CD Rom would work also since it was fixed I left it. Might be
worth a try.

Thanks for the replies. On one drive I have Sonic My DVD (this is the one I
added. The second is Lite-On cd-rw. XP used to recognize them about a month
ago.

Frank, where in the BIOS do I set it to No Drive? I may give that a try. Is
it under Advance?

Thanks

You might check for updates, sonic UDF reader, record engine, etc..
http://support.sonic.com/desktop/dow...?product=mydvd
As far as your particular BIOS you can investigate it yourself without fear,
as long as you exit without saving the changes, your call..
See if any might apply..
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;310123
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;324129
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=314096
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;321641

Also , in device manager for your IDE controller channel you could try
changing to PIO or DMA on the advanced tab and see if it makes a difference,
your call..

I tried everything listed. One odd thing is when I go in and change the
registry and I reboot - it set the settings back to '1' even when I set them
to '2'. It appears XP is doing the dirty work. I am at a loss - I do not
know what to do now.

Thanks anyway.

Have you set the jumper on the back of the drive properly to master or slave..?
If the other drive came stock with the computer could it be set to the (CS)
computer select setting. If so, you would need to set the jumper on the new
drive to CS to match the other devices on the system..

Default RE: CD-rw is not recognized as a recordable device

I was just rereading some other posts that mention that. I am going to check
tonight. What is wierd is that it was working fine about a month ago - then
all of the sudden - Nothing. I am sure XP is the culprit, but I am going to
try the jumpers. So if the new one is the Master and the Stock one became
the slave - I set the jumpers to match thdm correct?

Thanks for the advice.

Default RE: CD-rw is not recognized as a recordable device

Most stock systems come with a single hard drive set to master or computer
select on the primary IDE channel, a single stock optical drive set to master
or CS on the secondary IDE channel, this can vary by OEM.. If your system
came originally with the stock optical drive set as master or CS and you just
added the new optical drive to the next available data cable connector, it
should have been set to slave, if it was on the same channel, ie..The same
IDE data cable.. So, if you changed both optical drives on the secondary IDE
channel to master and or slave and your hard drive on the primary channel is
set to CS you would need to make sure all drives on both IDE channels are set
to CS.. You need to ID the jumper settings for all connected drives to verify
this, then either use CS for all drives on both IDE channels or the master &
slave jumper settings per channel.. It all depends on how you have configured
and installed your drives or whether their in an original stock
configuration...
If you want to, you can use the Nero Infotool to ID and report or post your
settings, configuration info, etc..
http://www.nero.com/en/Info_Tool.html
Hope this can help..

Default RE: CD-rw is not recognized as a recordable device

Well, I changed the jumpers on both drives and still nothing. It appears
that it does recognize the drives - I just can't get the Record option to
show. I believe I have tried everything that I could find on the net.
Everything from changing the registry to jumpers to filters to changing the
bios to updating the drives. Too strange for me. I guess I will not be
using XP to burn anything.
