Default Mouse pointer moves erratically on its own

This is happening on two windows XP laptops (with latest updates), using
either a fairly new Microsoft basic optical mouse connected to the usb port
or a standard ball mouse connected to the ps/2 connector . I have tried to
play with the XP mouse settings, but the problem remains and makes work very
hard.
Sometimes the arrow travels on its own to the top right corner and will not
move anywhere else, or to the bottom left corner.
It does not happen always, but it's very very frequent, more on a Toshiba
than on a Dell. I am using a wireless network in the house, should it have
anything to do with it.
All ideas are welcome.

Laptops usually have "built-in" mouse devices. Since you are setting up
another mouse onto your laptop, check the BIOS as to see what the laptop is
supposed to do? (Some laptops can auto-disable the built-in mice so that no
conflicts can occur with other mice.)

there are two devices listed under Mouse:
PS/2 Compatible Mouse
HID Compatible Mouse
Is this normal? I just have the basic optical mouse on usb and the
trackpoint on the keyboard.

I have a new Microsoft basic optical mouse that appears to get lost on my
desk top.
The arrow travels on its own to the top right corner, or to the bottom left
corner. It does not happen always, but it's very, frequent, I have changed
the mouse connections from a USB port to the PS/2 connector without
improvements or changes. I have attempted to upgrade my software with out
luck. My OS is Microsoft XP home and I have a standard desk top computer.

Apparently there is nothing you can do to solve the problem, this appears to
be a gift from Microsoft to all users of there Basic optical mouse no matter
what kind of computer or programming, I hope I am wrong on this point but
after reading all of the screams for help maybe we should all just drop our
Basic Optical Mice into the closest trash can.

Hi Alessandra,
I too have the same thing. When I connected the mouse to the PS/2 port
using a adaptor, I had only one listing under Mouse. Then, when I
changed it to a USB port, I got two. Moreover, the cursor moves to the
top right/left corner on its own. Is that a hardware defect ? If so,
can we claim a replacement? Let me know if you know anything? Thanks in
advance.

Default RE: Mouse pointer moves erratically on its own

I have read that the issue is related to the Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100
motherboard / keyboard / accupoint and that it is not related to the mouse. I
have used other types of mice and also just the built-in accupoint and the
problem remains. I have reinstalled XP and the problem remains.

I just have to live with it. Pressing ALT and using the keyboard, leaving
the mouse alone, seems to help a bit.

I am using a standard tower computer with an ASUS K8N motherboard and AMD 64
Athlon CPU with 1.5G of PC3200 DDR 400MHz ram. My OS is XP Home, Apparently
there is no fix for this problem as the Microsoft basic Optical Mouse is junk.
