Default C-Media CM19880 - no sound.

I'm running XP - SP2 on an ASUS P5AD2-E premium motherboard with an intel
pentium 4 3Ghz processor. It has C-Media audio installed on-board. I run MS
Update and attempted to instal a suggested optional hardware and software
update (didn't keep a note). They (or one of them crashed the system) and I
have no sound. Device manager General tab shows Audio device on High
Definition Audio bus as 'The drivers for this device are not installed
(Code28).' The properties tab shows under Audio, Midi and Mixer 'C-Media
High Definition Audio Device' and each of the properties under them show
'Driver is enabled and functioning properly'.

What do I do now?

Did you attempt System Restore?

Uninstall the card and do a reinstall, but this time you direct it where to
find the drivers, which should be the ones from the Asus website and stored
somewhere on your HDD.

It sounded like you had your sound working before, so I assume you do have
it turned on in bios?

It sounds like you made the mistake of installing drivers from Windows
Update. First try and roll them back.

How to Roll Back a Device Driver - http://tinyurl.com/86yb6

If that doesn't solve the issue, uninstall your soundcard and reinstall
using drivers that came with your motherboard. If you don't have a
driver cd, you can get them from Asus' website for that specific model
m/b.
