I like Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org. Obviously, you have to get the program from a working machine. You will either download the precompiled Windows binary to make a bootable floppy or the .iso to make a bootable cd. If you want to use the latter, you'll need to have third-party burning software on the machine where you download the file - XP's built-in burning capability won't do the job. In either case, boot with the media you made. The test will run immediately. Let the test run for an hour or two - unless errors are seen immediately. If you get any errors, replace the RAM. I don't like people to call themselves "dumb"; just because you don't know computer stuff doesn't mean you are dumb. We all have our areas of expertise. However, based on your posts I would say the best course of action for you would be to take the computer to a professional computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA). I think it's great that you want to try this yourself. I see from another post of yours that it was in fact bad RAM that caused your issues, so I'm happy you got it solved. Yes, some so-called professional computer repair people aren't any good. You can say the same thing about plumbers, electricians, car mechanics, and lawyers, etc. Unfortunately, there really isn't any way to tell up front. I usually suggest to people that they ask friends, family, and colleagues for names. Word-of-mouth is still the best way to find out about good hairdressers, doctors, and computer repair people.
