my computer often crashes. sometimes it starts again no problem but sometimes
i get a message saying "sysytem halted hardware malfunction. the latest error
log report says
"error code 0000008e, parameter1 0000005, parameter2 00064183, parameter3
64332c94, parameter4 00000000"
sometimes i get the blue screen telling me my sysytem has recovered from a
seroius error. the latest one said
"driver IRQL less or equal"
any help to tell me what these messages mean and how i can fix it would be
appreciated

A RAM test is software that tests whether your computer's memory is
good. I like Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org. Obviously, you have to
get the program from a working machine. You will either download the
precompiled Windows binary to make a bootable floppy or the .iso to
make a bootable cd. If you want to use the latter, you'll need to have
third-party burning software on the machine where you download the file
- XP's built-in burning capability won't do the job. In either case,
boot with the media you made. The test will run immediately. Let the
test run for an hour or two - unless errors are seen immediately. If
you get any errors, replace the RAM.

I don't like people to call themselves "dumb"; just because you don't
know computer stuff doesn't mean you are dumb. We all have our areas of
expertise. However, based on your posts I would say the best course of
action for you would be to take the computer to a professional computer
repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

thanks i downloaded the programme and made a bootable disc which showed i
have several errors so will get a new ram. i appreciate your help. you guys
are very generous with your time

should have said, sometimes the' professional' computer repairers don't know
very mush so how do you know if they are any good.besides, being a kiwi i

You "kiwis" are admirable and you may be blonde, but certainly are not
dumb. I think it's great that you want to try this yourself. I see from
another post of yours that it was in fact bad RAM that caused your
issues, so I'm happy you got it solved.

Yes, some so-called professional computer repair people aren't any good.
You can say the same thing about plumbers, electricians, car mechanics,
and lawyers, etc. Unfortunately, there really isn't any way to tell up
front. I usually suggest to people that they ask friends, family, and
colleagues for names. Word-of-mouth is still the best way to find out
about good hairdressers, doctors, and computer repair people.
