Default my new monitor - a dell 1905 19" - has the images and text distort

my new monitor - a dell 1905 19" - has the images and text distorted narrow
and tall. I estimate about 15%.
Dell sent a new monitor (thank you very much) but the same problem exists
with the new monitor.
Been on the phone with Dell and on support chat. No one seems to know what
to do.
If Dell doesn't know how to fix their own monitor who does? I don't think
the problem is in the monitor but in the system or software.
Help!

What resolution are you running the 1905FP at?

Its native resolution is 1280X1024. That's a 5:4 aspect ratio. Other common
resolutions, like 1024X768, are 4:3. If you're using one of those, and it's
stretched to fill the display, it will be slightly anamorphic: 16/15, or
approx 7% vertical stretch.

Have you installed the drivers for the monitor? That ought to limit XP to
using only supported resolutions and refresh rates.

After replacing with another monitor, Dell couldn't figure out that the
problem might be with the video card?

I have the same one. It took me a little while to get it figured out exactly
but what you need to do is this:

First, change your screen resolution to 1280x1024. That's the monitors
native resolution that it wants and setting it to anything else will
basically look like crap as you've already discovered. Yes it's small to the
eye but that's what works best.

Second, download microsoft clear type font power tool
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/...ePowerToy.mspx

Do those two things and that monitor looks georgous.

Hmm, I didn't look, but is this an LCD monitor? If so, LCD monitors have a
"native" resolution at which they were designed to function and where they
work best. I found http://snipurl.com/kvti where the "max" resolution is
displayed. It is a disservice that they don't mention the *native*
resolution for their monitor.

Dell has their own support forums at
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/. For Dell-specific questions,
visiting there might result in a more focused and experienced community
regarding your Dell-specific questions. I don't own any Dell stuff (and
never will) so I cannot attest to the professionalism and expertise of the
community that participates in the Dell forums. From a quick search, looks
like there are other troubles with this monitor (http://snipurl.com/kvtk, of
which a couple address seeing black bars due to the ratio of the monitor).
