Under Universal Serial Bus in the device manager, it looks as follows:
-------------------------------------------------------- - USB Root Hub - USB Root Hub - USB Root Hub - USB Root Hub - Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller - Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller - Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller - VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller -------------------------------------------------------- Physicaly, the computer has 2 USB ports on the lower backside of the comp, 2 USB ports on the higher backside of the comp, and 2 front panel ports. Motherboard is KM4M series - VIA KM400 chipset based. My question is, I have 6 USB ports firstly, whats all the other crap under Universal Serial Bus? And secondly, I have looked at the motherboard documentation and I know the 2 front conectors are 2.0, are the backones 2.0 or 1.1 or wat? Basically: Can i shove some probes in the plugs and get a reading to tell what version they are or is there some way i can be sure of the version of the port i test. Any help on this will be very very appriciated cuz this is pissing me off haha thanks heaps Ice |

No need to "shove some probes in the plugs and get a reading" -- simply
refer to the manual for your motherboard to determine if your USB controllers are version 1.1 or version 2.0. steve "Xx Ice xX" <XxIcexX@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5BF1B57B-7D82-477F-9BC2-DF6FA888C91E@microsoft.com... > Under Universal Serial Bus in the device manager, it looks as follows: > -------------------------------------------------------- > - USB Root Hub > - USB Root Hub > - USB Root Hub > - USB Root Hub > - Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller > - Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller > - Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller > - VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller > -------------------------------------------------------- > > Physicaly, the computer has 2 USB ports on the lower backside of the comp, > 2 > USB ports on the higher backside of the comp, and 2 front panel ports. > > Motherboard is KM4M series - VIA KM400 chipset based. > > My question is, I have 6 USB ports firstly, whats all the other crap under > Universal Serial Bus? A USB 2.0 capable thumb drive is the perfect device for this. XP will
"spank" you if its a USB 1.1 port that you plug the thumb drive in by a notification. -- Jonny "Xx Ice xX" <XxIcexX@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5BF1B57B-7D82-477F-9BC2-DF6FA888C91E@microsoft.com... > Under Universal Serial Bus in the device manager, it looks as follows: > -------------------------------------------------------- > - USB Root Hub > - USB Root Hub > - USB Root Hub > - USB Root Hub > - Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller > - Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller > - Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller > - VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller > -------------------------------------------------------- > > Physicaly, the computer has 2 USB ports on the lower backside of the comp, 2 > USB ports on the higher backside of the comp, and 2 front panel ports. > > Motherboard is KM4M series - VIA KM400 chipset based. > > My question is, I have 6 USB ports firstly, whats all the other crap under > Universal Serial Bus? The Enhanced controller signifies USB 2.0 compatibilty. The reason for the other listing of the
controllers is for the 1.1 backwards compatibility. I ran into the same thing with a 2.0 PCI card I installed, got an enhanced and 2 other controllers listed in Device manager. Then I read that the extra controllers listed was for the backwards to 1.1. -- Dave Vair CNE, CNA, MCP, A+, N+ "Xx Ice xX" <XxIcexX@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5BF1B57B-7D82-477F-9BC2-DF6FA888C91E@microsoft.com... It says 500 mA available per port. That should be enuf to tell me its 2.0
right? I did get a funny message saying use USB 2.0 ur crap wil benifit more but it hasnt been consistent in bringing it up. That first was the last i saw of it. The motherboard manual tels me the front 2 are 2.0 but says nothing of the version of the back four... as i said I dont really understand why i have so many other entries tho. Backwards 1.1? It doesnt make sense to me but it sounds like these ports im using are 2.0 so I think ill quite here and say im happy lol Thanks for your help everyone Much Appriciated Ice "David Vair" wrote: > The Enhanced controller signifies USB 2.0 compatibilty.
