Default MS Digital Media Pro Keyboard locks

Hi, I have a 3 year old Dell Demension 8250 PC with Windows XP SP2. My
PS2 keyboard port failed, so I replaced the Dell PS2 keyboard by a
Microsoft Digital Media Pro USB keyboard. Initially this worked fine,
but after a few days the keyboard started to lock after a couple of
hours of use. It came back to life after disconnecting/reconnecting
the USB plug. Sometimes this trick doesn't work, but reconnecting to
another USB port does. When that doesn't work, powering down the
system works. Sometimes I have to try each of these tricks 10 times
before it works again. I replaced the Intellitext 5.2 driver by the
latest 5.4 version, but that is no improvement to the problem.
Any suggestion ? Thanks in advance !

The keyboard works fine when I plug it in on my son's laptop, but so it
does when I plug it in on my desktop. It's only after some hours of
usage that it locks up, I havn't got the chance to get hold of another
PC so long. I still hope that it is some kind of software conflict
that pops up incidentally, but you're probably right that it is a
hardware problem. Would that be a replaceable device on my motherboard
? I have 8 USB 2.0 connectors of which 6 are in use and continue to
work fine (printer, PDA, camera, scanner, and GPS) when the keyboard
locks up, so I assume the USB interface is OK. But when the keyboard
doesn't work, Windows says that the (keyboard) USB device is not
recognised...

Hi Paul
Unplug all USB devices exept keyboard, and try that for a length of time.
If it works ok then it seems that you may be overloading the USB port
voltage
if so one solution would be to buy a "Mains Powered USB hub".

Thanks Chas voor the splendid idea ! Connecting all 6 USB devices to a
mains powered USB hub solved the problem. The keyboard works
perfectly, now for 10 days in a row.
