hard drive install

Sorry to post this here, I can't seem to find another current/valid
comp.hardware group.

I just bought a new Gateway PC all put together, and along with it a
second WD hard drive. I did not scecify what kind, I assumed I didn't
have to, but now when I go to install the second drive, it looks like
main drive is SATA and the second one is and IDE. I've never
encountered this before, I've only installed IDE drives. I don't know
if I can do this or how. Can anyone point me in the right direction or
even the right news group?

Greg, as long as your Motherboard has a IDE Channel ( connector ) just
install the drive as you normally would as Master.
In the Bios is where the drive should be selected as Boot drive ( SATA).
You may have to rt click MyComputer>select Manage>
Disk Management>assign a drive letter. Also format the drive.

Google "Install SATA hard drive".

The SATA hard drive is very similar to an IDE drive, it has a data and
power cable. It should come with its own. The main difference is
there is no master/slave business; each drive has its own connection on
the motherboard. The only thing is if your motherboard has the proper
connector on it. If it doesn't, you're kind of SOL. The connector
should be around the IDE connectors. Again, Google for exact images.

There is what looks like an IDE connector on the MB, it's not near the
SATA connectors, and it's not labeled. I had to go get a power adapter-
SATA to IDE. I guess I'll go ahead and try it.

the second one is an IDE. I've never encountered this before, I've only
installed IDE drives.

why didn't Gateway install it?

Because I knew, or rather -thought- that I could install it myself,
since I've installed HDs before, but I guess I've only heard of SATA
and really had little idea of what that was.

Well this just isn't working. The cable they gave me was for a IDE to
an SATA power connector, I need just the opposite. The don't have such
a thing, so I guess I need to get a "Y" splitter as he called it, but
those are still only about 4 inches long, I need it to be at least 10
inches. The IDE power cables, which there are 3 connectors for, have
the 3 connectors all close together so there is not enough slack to go
from the 2 CD drives to the bottom of the case where the HD will be. Is
there such thing as a 10 inch extension for this?

Now, as to your problem...
I'm not sure I completely understand your problem. I assume your problem is
that you're currently having difficulty making a power connection to your
SATA HD. Is that right?

If it is, your WD SATA drive includes both the 15-pin SATA power connector
and the legacy 4-pin Molex power connector, does it not? So is the problem
that the 15-pin SATA power plug cable on your power supply (assuming your PS
is equipped with the SATA power plug) not long enough to reach your SATA
drive? Can't you use the Molex power plug on your PS to connect to your SATA
drive?

You use the term "IDE power cable". Are you referring to the Molex (4-pin)
power plug? There's no problem with the signal/data cable connection to your
SATA drive is there?

And you're aware there are available 18" long Molex to SATA (15-pin)
extension power cables, are you not?

But if I misunderstand your problem and you want to continue this, please
clarify.

I've figured it out now. The MB doesn't even have a IDE plug. I need to
go with an SATA drive. I assumed the folks at Curcit City would have
known this.
