Default Microphone Problem

I recently got a Microphone/headset for my computer. The speakers on it work
fine, but the Mic. Does not. I've tried to run the Sound Hardware Test
Wizard, but at the end it stops and displays an error message, stating
"Windows Cannot Execute DPVSetup.exe, Use Add/Remove Programs Control Panel
to Install". I've checked the Microsoft support website, and tried their
solution (enable hardware acceleration), but the problem persists. I then
tried another suggestion on a website and altered some registry values.

The long and the short of it is that my mic still doesn't work and I have no
idea why.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you double click on the speaker in your sys tray, is the mic
represented there? Is it muted?

My mic is not muted, neither the system tray nor the switch on the mic itself
show it as muted.

Did you double click on the icon in the sys tray? Does the mic appear
there or not?

When I first open up the system tray volume I get a display that shows all of
your standard playback options, they are all not-muted and are at a
reasonable volume. If I then go to Options?Properties>Recording the window
changes to show CD Audio, Line in, and Microphone, all of them are also not
muted and are at the maximum volume.

Edit: I feel like an idiot and I apologise for wasting your time, Microphone
is now displayed and it was muted.

Glad you got it sorted out.

BTW, if you use it for VoIP, it needs to be muted :-)

Whee, yet another post.
It was muted, however, even when I un-mute it I still cannot get it to work,
the sounds and audio devices setup still cites an error with Dvpsetup.exe.
Now, do I need to have the setup working in order for my mic to work? Or will
simply un-muting it allow me to use it?

Unmute it and see if it works. You should hear yourself on your speakers.

A search of "dvpsetup.exe" in google gives me a lot of hits, perhaps if you
try to enter your exact error message in google you will get a solution to
your problem.
