Default Win XP won't Boot

I recently installed win xp home on my comp becuase i had a messed up win98.
i installed xp and then i shut the computer down and installed a cd-rw/dvd-r.
when i booted it again the bios said that everything is working fine but
when i tried to load windows it just froze on the black screen with the logo
and the blue status bar. the bar stops moving. i uninstalled the drive and
everything's ok again.
