Default Removing ALL traces of a device EVER having been plugged into a USB port?

Freecom Classic SL 80Gb USB HD on XP HomeSP2 - the BIOS check time for my PC
has increased massively, and is still a bit longer than usual even when
drive is unplugged from USB port. How can I clear ALL entries from the
registry, and start again, maybe in a different port?
The strange thing is, I can "speed up" the boot time again, but doing the
"hold power button with cable out" trick, which is usually for the memory
card slots.

Even when I uninstall the freecom software, it still "remembers" the
driver - what I want to do is unplug and remove ALL traces of it, and start
again.

Has anyone else got a freecom external HDD? In fact, it was working OK with
version 2.17 of the software, except that it wouldn't compress and protect
filenames with a square bracket in them, hence the need to try v2.20, which
is when it all went wrong!

It gets stranger! With drive plugged in to ANY port, nothing shows in
"add/remove programs", but pull drive out and it populates!
Weird? I should say!
