Default Display screen is 1/3 normal size

I'm not talking about the fonts here. No matter what size font, the
entire size of the screen is about 1/3 normal size. I have adjusted
the switches on the monitor itself (left, right, up, down, wide,
thin...you know) I have made the display screen as large as it will
get. This is a computer I'm updating for someone, so am not familiar
with the problem.

When the computer first boots, the entire screen is filled. It's just
when I go into windows that it only takes up 1/3 (horizontally) of the
screen.

HELP!

Try this.

Right click a blank area of the Desktop | Properties | Settings
tab | Advanced button | Monitor tab | Screen refresh rate.

Fiddle with the refresh rate until your display fills the screen.

You will probably have to lower the setting. Mine is set at 60 HZ.
Some people advise against this setting. It's supposed to make your
screen flicker.

Mine does not flicker. 60 HZ is the only setting that allows
the display to fill my screen.

Unfortunately, it's already set at 60 HZ. Let me give a little more
background.

This was my son's computer, and it had so much trash on it I said I'd
format the hard drive and add WindowsXP. I hooked it up to a spare
monitor I had, and the was perplexed to see that the display screen was
small. He was running Windows 2002 at the time. I went to the
properties and changed the resolution to 480x620 (?). Anyway, that
fixed the problem and the entire screen was filled.

I proceeded to format the hd and install WindowsXP. Everything was
fine throughout installation, but when Windows finished booting, it was
back to a small screen. I went back to properties, but the lowest
resolution in XP is 800x600.

I am at a loss as to what to do? I looked at the bios, but don't see
anything addressing this. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Do you have the latest XP compatible drivers for the video card?

Check at the manufacturer's web site?
