I just bought an external hard drive (USB Mass Storage Device). I am able to
browse through disk management to initialize, activate, partition, and format the disk and it can then be found through My Computer and I can create files on it. The problem is that after some time (less than an hour, not sure how long exactly) the drive disappears from My Computer and is no longer available in Disk Management so I have to disconnect and reconnect the drive. Why is my drive disappearing? How do I get it to stay? |

Anything like power management running?
Anyway, check Start->Run devmgmt.msc -> USB controllers (?) -> RClick USB Root Hub (all of them, one at a time) -> Properties -> Power Management tab -> "Allow computer to turn off .." If checked, UN-check -- Tumppi ================================= Most learned on these newsgroups Helsinki, FINLAND (translations from/to FI not always accurate ================================= "High4Tower" <High4Tower@discussions.microsoft.com> kirjoitti viestissä:700E33B6-534F-416F-87BD-582F4587EF1C@microsoft.com... >I just bought an external hard drive (USB Mass Storage Device). I can navigate up until "Properties," but don't see Power Management tab
between them! I thought it was resolved, but it actually didn't work. What I had done was
change a setting on the USB Root Hub properties so that the computer could not turn the device off to save power. But, my drive is still disappearing ![]() "BigFatGoalie" wrote: > > What was the resolution here? > > I would be interested to know, if you dn't mind me asking. > > Thomas Wendell Wrote: > > Hope it helps.. > > > > You're welcome > > > > > > -- > > Tumppi > > ================================= > > Most learned on these newsgroups > > Helsinki, FINLAND > > (translations from/to FI not always accurate > > ================================= > > > > > > > > > > "High4Tower" High4Tower@discussions.microsoft.com kirjoitti > > viestissä:7CF00F05-B093-4E8D-8891-5AF7075BCE00@microsoft.com... > > Never mind that...found it! > > > > Thanks so much! > > > > "Thomas Wendell" wrote: > > > > Anything like power management running? > > > > Anyway, check > > Start-Run devmgmt.msc - USB controllers (?) - RClick USB Root > > Hub > > (all of them, one at a time) - Properties - Power Management tab - > > "Allow > > computer to turn off .." > > If checked, UN-check > > > > > > -- > > Tumppi > > ================================= > > Most learned on these newsgroups > > Helsinki, FINLAND > > (translations from/to FI not always accurate > > ================================= > > > > > > > > > > "High4Tower" High4Tower@discussions.microsoft.com kirjoitti > > viestissä:700E33B6-534F-416F-87BD-582F4587EF1C@microsoft.com... > > I just bought an external hard drive (USB Mass Storage Device). It wouldn't happen to be one of them that turns itself off would it?
Other possibilities are you don't have enough power for everything pluged into USB. High4Tower wrote: > I thought it was resolved, but it actually didn't work.
