Default Intellimouse button assignements don't work on laptop - HELP!

I have the wireless Intellimouse Explorer and I've downloaded and
installed Intellipoint 5.2 on my Fujitsu Lifebook laptop. When I plug
the wireless receiver into the USB port on the laptop, Windows sees the
new hardware and says it's ready to use. I can move the mouse around,
the left and right clocks work as they should, and the scroll wheel
works fine. However, when I go into Intellipoint and assign the buttons
to different functions (wheel button closes app.), it won't work.
Furthermore, when I look at the hardware description for the mouse, it
shows "Microsoft PS/2 Port Mouse (Intellipoint)". I don't have anything
plugged in to the PS/2 port, but this laptopn does have a touchpad.
I've tried disabling the touchpad in the BIOS, but I still get the same
problem.

Does anyone have any ideas or other possible solutions??

Thanks!

on the mouse control panel's dialog, hardware tab, what does it list?
Does it show the mouse as attached to the usb? it should. it may show
the touchpad too.

IP 5.4 will work w/ that mouse, and seems a bit more stable. it also does
a good job of removing any remnants of a previous driver, which in the
past caused all kinds of problems - 5.4's installer is solid.

Try it:

note: finding 5.4 on the ms site itself can be a bear; above link is a
good one tho...

I downloaded the software update, but I'm still having the same issue.
Like I was saying in my post before, the hardware tab indicates
"Microsoft PS/2 Port Mouse (Intellipoint" and it now shows the correct
driver of 5.40. This mouse isn't plugged in to the ps/2 port though.
The wireless receiver is plugged in to the USB port. Does that make
sense? Any other thoughts on what might be causing this? Can I not do
this??
