Default cd rom stuck!

A few days ago, i inserted my new evanescence cd into the disk drive. Not
knowing that this "cd" is actually more of a dvd, its now stuck. My cd rom
won't open...the button on the CPU wont work...do i have any alternatives? i
dont care about the cd, but i dont want to wreck my computer...my sister is
gonna freak when she finds out! please help!

In my computer, right click on the troublesome cd drive and select eject.
or
get a very small screwdriver "carefull here" and insert it into the small
hole at the front of the cd, dont worry it is an emergency opening
method. Push inwards "Carefully" and the cd drawer will open.

since the drive is bad anyway...
if you are very careful...you can pry it open with a screw driver...
being careful no to damage the dvd inside.
as long as you are going to have to replace it anyway...
might as well go all the way and get a cd/dvd burner...
i just bought a new one for about $40...so you will not be out too much
money to get something better than what you had.

look at it this way...
you will have an opportunity to upgrade your sister's machine

The cd not ejecting or playing does not mean that the drive is bad. A
corrupt cd can cause the
system not to release the cd even when the button is pressed

you've made a good point...
so the "pry" method should only be used as a last resort

Most CD and DVD drives have an emergency eject mechanism.

Power down the PC. Straighten a large paperclip and insert it through the
small hole in the front of the drive. (Another poster suggested a
screwdriver, but it'd have to be a really small one.) You should be able to
press a catch mechanism that'll release the tray. That should work even if
the CD drive is shot.

If you're reasonably careful, you won't damage either the CD or the drive
this way.

I'm not hopeful that the CD drive will be OK, though. Good luck with it. A
CD drive is inexpensive and fairly easy to replace, but paying someone to do
it for you may not be all that cheap. I think that one of the (shudder)
chain stores might do it for $50 plus the cost of the drive. (That's a
little dear for 20-30 minutes' work.)

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

John, In "my computer" only my harddrives and 3 1/2 floppy disk drives are
shown. For some reason, no cd drive. Also, i tried the screwdriver thing;
still no luck. Thanks though, eroina

If you right click on my computer, select properties and select the hardware
tab.
Select the Device Manager button and look at the DVD/CD-Rom drives.
How many DVD/CD drives do you physically have i the tower case?
You should have the same ammount of drives in device manager.
Do you have a yellow exclamation mark against the DVD/CD drive?
if so the drive is not installed correctly. try uninstalling the DVD/CD
click the drive to select it and select uninstall from the menu (Monitor
with an X through it)
Reboot you system and see if it re-enables itself.
Another thing to try is see if the drive works in dos, start the system
using a windows 98se boot floppy disk, see if the drive has been detected
and is operating. If you dont have a bootdisk, download this utilty to
create one. http://www.mbhs.edu/~jaosborn/boot98se.exe
if your system will not boot from a floppy disk you will have to set the 1st
boot device in bios to boot from floppy.
if you are not sure how to do that see here.
http://www.infopeople.org/resources/...tion/bios.html
If you dont get or have not got a drive being detected you may have a loose
cable in the case. Open the case carefully and check for loose cables on the
DVD/CD drive, there should be 1 power and 1 IDE cable connecting to the
motherboard.
Do you have a light on the front of the DVD/CD?
if not you may have a faulty DVD/CD drive, in which case it would need
replacing. Quite an easy task but please be careful.
A good site to look at for instructions is here

Post back with details of how you get on,

Considering my sister is smart and didn't let me have admin privlages, pretty
much everything you're suggesting is not possible for me. I couldn't even
access the hardware tab! One thing that I did check was for the light, and
there was none. I agree with you, i'll probbably just need a new CD
drive...which is odd because we've had this computer for a few years now and
the CD drive has been fine. There goes my allowance! lol...Thank you so much
for all your help.
