Default CPU Usage shows green & red

My computer has been running very slow and hanging....In task manager the CPU
usage shows both green & red on the graph. Usually the "red" on the bar is
abot 1/3 of the bar. Is this the "norm" The cpu usage also seems to peak at
100% a lot...HELP.Hope I made some sense.

Red indicates the kernel usage. You have chosen to display it in the graph
by choosing "display kernel times".

It sounds to me like you have one to many apps running in the
background. Try killing a few of these, and you should drop that level
a bit. If you're getting the same message during normal operation, you
obviously need to upgrade your processor.
