Perhaps the firewire card is in a PCI slot that is sharing and IRQ with a
conflicting device, try moving the card to a different PCI slot (I had a similar problem with an IDE controller card in which the slot I originally put it in was sharing an IRQ with my onboard IDE controller). Also, concerning your onboard firewire, did you check to see if the controller was enabled in your BIOS?
