Hi,
This morning my XP Pro just completely refused to work, after every logon it would just restart (even with restart on failure disabled). The day before this happened my DVD and CD drives stopped working with a code 37 in device manager. I tried fixing my XP install by rebooting onto my XP setup disk and then repairing my XP installation, but then the reparation failed also. What I then did was using a spare 20gig partition I installed a temporary XP in hope that I might find a way to access the documents and settings folder so I can retrieve the my documents folder, this would have been good if I hadn't made my folders private previously, so now when I open this folder I get an Access Denied Message. I tried booting into safe mode to try and change access permissions but no luck there either, I then tried changing the corrupt partition from NTFS to FAT32 (in hope that i might be able to overcome NTFS Security) using partition magic but partition magic would'nt let me for some reason, I even downloaded a copy of live linux to try and see if that would let me but the live linux wouldn't even open the partition at all (tried 3 different distros). What else can you suggest I try to retrieve my files? Thank you, Josh |

How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp In XP Home you have to boot in safe mode to see the security tab. In XP Pro you have to disable simple file sharing. Thank you for your help Ricky,
I now have access to my files, I was however in the process of running file recovery software to retrieve my files but this definetely has saved me a lot of time and is helpful for future knowledge. Thanks again, Josh "Ricky" wrote: > How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP > http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp > In XP Home you have to boot in safe mode to see the security tab.
