When I tried to hibernate my laptop this morning it locked up so pressed the
power button to shut it down. When I rebooted a box appeared saying something about there had been a change to the registry but that a replacement file had been recovered off my system. I didnt think to note the exact wording as it sounded like it was now okay but it is not. All my program files and desktop shortcuts were changed to .lnt files. If I click to open anything a box appears saying it needs to know what program to open it with. I cannot access anything. I tried to download a registry checking program but I get the same box saying it does not know what to open it with. I did manage to open Norton and scan the system and it showed no viruses. I tried a system restore but I get the same error...it cannot open it. Anyone have any suggestions of how to get things back where they belong? |

To the left is a menu showing Folder Tasks with Extract all files. When I double clicked that icon it brought up a box asking if I wanted to run this software...I clicked run and a box came up stating "Are you sure you want to add the information in C:\DOCUME~1\KJJ911\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for xp_exe_fix[1].zip\xp_exe_fix.reg to the registry? When I click yes it says it cannot import....Error opening the file. May be a disk or file system error. HOWEVER, if I do the same using Mozilla browser it says it has been successfully enter into the registry. I rebooted at that point but nothing changed. |

I think you have the wrong fix (but no harm done)
I doubt that you really mean .exe files changed to .lnt files. If by .lnt files, you mean all the shortcuts show as .lnk then get the LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix from http://dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP Windows - Internet Explorer http://dts-l.org/index.html On Wed, 21 Dec 2005 14:16:02 -0800, "KJ" <KJ@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: >When I tried to hibernate my laptop this morning it locked up so pressed the >power button to shut it down. Thank you so much. I thought it was all the files because everything in
Programs along with the desktop icons were switched to .lnk and unusable but the link you provided corrected 90% and from that I was able to use 2 other links to correct the rest. I can't thank you enough : ) "Alan Edwards" wrote: > I think you have the wrong fix (but no harm done) > I doubt that you really mean .exe files changed to .lnt files. > If by .lnt files, you mean all the shortcuts show as .lnk then get the > LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix from > http://dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm > > ....Alan > -- > Alan Edwards, MS MVP Windows - Internet Explorer > http://dts-l.org/index.html > > On Wed, 21 Dec 2005 14:16:02 -0800, "KJ" > <KJ@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > > >When I tried to hibernate my laptop this morning it locked up so pressed the > >power button to shut it down.
