Default 20-30 minute crashes

I just installed win XP pro this past weekend, and I am already wanting to go
back to 2000. For some reason, winxp will just lock up every 20-30 minutes
when i am running a full screen app. The mouse still moves, but won't
register any clicks. Also, Ctrl+alt+del doesn't seem to do anything. I have
to manually power down the system. I have already updated all my drivers,
checked my hardware connections, and cleaned out the system. I dont think
that it is an overheating problem like everyone else. I clean the computer
out once a month. While using win2000, I never had this problem. I am afraid
to run my rendering processes for fear of losing everything. If anyone could
provide some help I would greatly appreciate it.

Did you upgrade from Win2K or did you do a clean Install of WinXP?
Try downloading Motherboard Monitor. It's free and will give you temp
and voltage readings. Your 3.3, 5 and 12v rails
should not dip below 5% of their values.

I did a clean install of WinXP. All of my voltages are correct. The temp is
well within tolerance, and all of the hardware cables are snug in there
places. I went back down to win2000 and was able to use the computer with no
problems. I just put Winxp back on once again, and the problem is still
here....Thanks for your response..Any other suggestions.???

While the readings (temp) that you can see are fine, you didn't say if
you cleaned out the PSU, Case, Fans, etc....

As for XP, have you looked for a BIOS Update for your motherboard? Some
boards, older ones, required an update in order to be stable for XP.

Thank you for your response. I did infact clean out the entire system, fans,
ps, case,etc...I have also updated the mb with the newest bios and drivers.
However, everything i run still crashes after 20 or so minutes. I am really
beginning to hate my move to WinXP Pro..Any further help would be greatly
appreciated...

Thanks in Advance,
Klaeq

How much RAM memory do you have? Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task
Manager and select the Performance Tab. What is the Total, the Commit Charge
and the Peak?

How large is your hard drive? Is it partitioned? How much free space on
each drive / partition. How is the drive formatted -FAT32 or NTFS. To
get this information whilst in Windows Explorer place the cursor on each
drive in turn, right click and select Properties.

What is the CPU?

Look in the System and Application logs of Event Viewer and post copies
of Warning and Error Reports.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message(email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

Begin troubleshooting your startup programs and srevices, then troubleshoot
hardware problems.

Start by checking the Event Viewer for error messages.
Click Start | All Programs | Administrative | Event Viewer
You can copy error messages to the clipbook, by double-clicking the error
then clicking the copy button that looks like 2 sheets of paper.
Post them here and someone will try and help you understand and fix them.

To troubleshoot Startup items, click Start | Run | msconfig.exe click OK
Click the Startup tab.
Remove all check marks and reboot and try to cause the lockup.
If the lockup no longer happens, run msconfig.exe and place a check by ONLY
1 item
and reboot.
Repeat the above, reactivating one item at a time until the crash occures,
then suspect and seek
help with the last item reactivated.

If after trying the above you need to continue and troubleshoot hardware,
i'll post suggestions on doing so then.

The Error Report posted related to a particular Game. Do the other Error
Reports relate to the same game or do they include other games?

Games: The game stops responding or quits unexpectedly
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=k...007&sid=global

Did you check for yellow question marks after updating the drivers and BIOS?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Did the Video Card come with the computer as new or did you add it later?

Many games have issues with XP, most of the problem games are the ones
not written for 2000/xp, but for Win95, Win98,ME. In many cases you will
have problems that can't be resolved unless you change hardware, but
that's even a crap shoot.

Try this, don't play Patriots and see if the computer runs without
failing, use it for everything except that game, and then let us know.
