Each time I start my computer, I get a message that new hardware has been
found, but I have not installed anything new. The message shows that the new hardware is PCI Communications Controller. The other part of the problem is that my modem is no longer attached to its proper port (COM3). What's causing this and how do I fix it. -- Tom W |

Try this. - Open Device Manager and Remove the Modem (uninstall) from there. - Shut Down Windows. - Turn off the computer. - Disconnect from power. - Open the case. - Remove the modem card. - Reconnect to power. - Turn on the computer and boot into Windows. - Log in. - Log out and shutdown the computer. - Disconnect from power. - ** Put the modem back into the computer and tighten it down. - Close the computer case. - Reconnect to Power. - Turn on the computer and boot into Windows. - Log in. The ** represents a decision you can make. If you have another available slot to plug the modem into - I suggest you do so. No reason to put it in the same slot it was in before. Also - this all assumes your modem is not built into your motherboard. If it is - just go into device manager - remove the device - reboot and let it attempt to find it again. Also - go to the modem manufacturer (or motherboard manufacturer) web page and look for (get) updated drivers for the modem. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |
