Default How remove "locked for editing"?

Occasionally my copy of Word crashes and leaves a file "locked for editing".
Reboot unlocks, but rebooting is a nuisance.
Until I buy the newest version of Word, is there a way I can force an
unlock, e.g. by editing the Registry?
OS = Windows XP Home
