Default software evaluations

26/Dec/2005

Is there an INDEPENDENT site that has software evaluations?

Thank you,

Barry Karas

PS I was told to input the name of the program into a search engine
but the people who make the search engine may be "on the take." This
paranoia was probably unjustified many years ago, but the Internet has
become very popular, so crooks may have discovered it.

No.

There is no one company that would be able to take on such a task
(evaluating all software).
You have to be more specific with the purpose of the software you are
wanting the objective evaluation on.

So - if you want evaluations on "Financial" software - that is one thing.
Evaluations for "Office or Productivity" software - another thing.
Evaluations on "Graphic Design" software - yet another.
"Design" software (then the type of design - engineering, architectural,
artistic, etc.) is another.

You are using too broad of a brush to paint your picture and ending up with
all one color. =)

While you can read reviews (user reviews) of software on the various
download sites found in abundance on the web or read reviews done by various
online magazines on certain products (sometimes a type of product) - there
is always some software out there that they missed for one reason or another
or that doesn't have a review yet.

As far as I know - and obviously everyone else who has read your question so
far (or at least has put thought into it) - there site that fits the broad
scheme you seem to be implying - no company and no entity I know of covers
that much ground. =)

Maybe. Or maybe not.

There isn't any one site or publication that is completely unbiased and
reliable. All commercial sites and professional reviewers may be biased
towards companies that either advertise with them or supply them with free
software. User reviews are often done by people who have little or no
experience with competing products. They buy one product then review it.
Also you must be aware that most of what you find on the Internet will be
complaints. Very few people will take the time to say something is working
great. If a company sells several million copies of a software product there
is bound to be some users who have problems. You have to do your own
research. Google is a good tool for this. Read a sampling of what you find
on any one software title, apply a good dose of scepticism, and make up your
own mind.

You're right, I don't. But if I feel that the source is honest... Also I usually like two or more answers so I can compare the answers.
