Ok This may be a dump question: I have a DELL DIMENSION 4700. It currently has DDR-2 memory. 2 sticks(256 each) for a total of 512. I wanted to upgrade so I bought a single DDR-2 STICK for 1 GIG. Installed it - it does not work. Am I making a mistake? Can these ddr-2 only be installed as pairs, is there a sequence to the install? The memory type is right cause, it matches the dell specifications. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Googler |

You need to buy another DDR-2 512MB Always check the manufacturer first ! -- Dave http://www.claymania.com/removal-trojan-adware.html http://www.ik-cs.com/got-a-virus.htm |

You might be able to deduce something from what
http://www.memoryx.com recommends for the machine Their 1gb chips worked okay in my Dell Inspiron 2200 and 1200 -- Ron Hardin rhhardin@mindspring.com On the internet, nobody knows you're a jerk. |

DIMENSION 4700
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc.../Y69490LRs.pdf NOTICE: If you remove your original memory modules from the computer during a memory upgrade, keep them separate from any new modules that you may have, even if you purchased the new modules from Dell. If possible, do not pair an original memory module with a new memory module. Otherwise, your computer may not start properly. You should install your original memory modules in pairs either in DIMM connectors 1 and 2 or DIMM connectors 3 and 4. Addressing Memory With 4-GB Configurations Your computer supports a maximum of 4 GB of memory when you use four 1-GB DIMMs. Current operating systems, such as Microsoft® Windows® XP, can only use a maximum of 4 GB of address space; however, the amount of memory available to the operating system is less than 4 GB. Certain components within the computer require address space in the 4-GB range. Any address space reserved for these components cannot be used by computer memory. Too bad notebook computers are NOT the same as desktop computers. Different motherboards employ different chip-sets and technology and to compare them is like comparing apples to oranges (so to speak). So you can't compare an Inspiron notebook's technology to a Dimension 4700 desktop. Let's see you put a desktop RAM module in that notebook ! -- Dave http://www.claymania.com/removal-trojan-adware.html http://www.ik-cs.com/got-a-virus.htm |
