Problem appeared to be NAV 2004. I was experiencing sluggish performance and
long delays. Scanned with NAV and ADware & SpyBot S&D. Didn't find anything.
NAV disabled itself (red X through icon on task bar). Finally got a warning
screen that the trial period had expired??!! So I tried to remove &
reinstall. Used Windows Programs Add/Remove. No go. Wouldn't work. So I
deleted all instances of NAV & Symantec in registry using Regedit, and all
files in system folders and program folders. System now boots faster and
when it runs, runs faster. Having a problem with reboot -- on
Start>Shutdown, it appears normal, but ends in a blue screen with no error
message instead of Power Off.

Tried to do a system restore to several points a week to two weeks before
and no luck... won't restore. Was going to try a Repair with original CD,
but realized that SP-1 and 2 will cause problems because they're not on the
original disk. 8={...

What I'm most concerned with is when I look at Task Manager in Win XP is
that the number of handles is continuously increasing (now over 14100) ,
while number of threads and processes is steady and the system cache is up
over 340000!! At some point the system will crash. How can I reset the
cache?

I note that the thread ntkrnlpa.exe and ACPI.sys are quite active and keep
replicating. This may be the reason for the numbers I've noted in Task
Manager, but I don't know what to do with them.

My next step is to reinstall NAV. Any suggestions?

The system consists of a Tyan motherboard, AMD Opeteron 240 CPU, 4 Gb RAM,
WinXP SP2 and a host of programs. I'm also running Zone Alarm.

I doubt that you removed all references of nav from your registry,it's not
that easy with nav, espescially the one to kill the program after the trial
period expires sp a reinstall wont work unless you buy it, Oh by the way you
have a worm on your system!

Thanks for the suggestions, Mike.

I've scanned these files with NAV 2k4 and most recent signatures, as well as
with AdWare. They seem to be legit. Checked Symantec's site. NTKrnlpa.exe
with SP-1 is version 5.1.2600.1151. I've got SP-2 installed with v
5.1.2600.2622. Couldn't find the size or date for that... so I'm off the MS's
site to check out further.

Funny, it's been working okay for about 7 months now. I'm not sure whether
it's due to recent security updates in IE or NAV just took a fit.

Any idea how I can reset the system cache? It's continuously increasing and
doesn't get reset on shutdown. (Found in Task Manager>Performance.)
