XP stuck is startup mode, HELP

when turning on the computer, xp is stuck in startup mode, i tried safe
mode, system restore, but it want allow me to turn on system restore.
Help!!! my data is so precious

Have you tried 'Last Known Good Configuration' - same screen as access to
Safe Mode?

to give more info, comp was fine until i downloaded EA Generals&Zero
Hour basic patch from the company website. windows xp is stuck in
Starting up, it just sits, safe mode will not allow me to enable
restore. Can i boot my xp cd without losing my files? if so, i don't
mine, if its a quick fix.
