Default usb ports crapped out!

I plugged in a cheap usb optical mouse to my tablet pc and it acted strange
and then my laptop shut down by itself. after re-booting and throwing away
the piece of crap mouse, my usb ports don't work anymore. I have uninstalled
and installed all the usb and HID devices and drivers, restored my computer
to an earlier date, tried booting in safe mode, also made sure all OS
updates were
up to date!. The ports supply power, as evidenced by my Ipod charging, but no
recognition of the Ipod, camera, flash drive etc.
Anyone have any idea what I should try next, prior to sending my laptop off
for service, which i loath to do???
thanks

yes, thanks for responding. can't see any problems in Device Manager -ALL
controllers and hubs are there.
I have been searching online for days trying to find a solution to this
issue.
One thing that may be a clue is that when Igo to F2 setup for BIOS there is
no mention of USB ports on the advanced menu , only infrared port is
available to enable or disable.
does this tell anyone anything about what the problem could be? I have
updated my BIOS 'but maybe I didn't do it correctly.

I would think that if they are okay, that the bios must be correct.
only refernec to USB in my BIOS is USB keybrd. nothing about ports.

maybe delete all usb controller referneces in Device Manager and let
computer/windows restore/detect new hardware when rebooting.
