Hi all,
I have a problem i hope someone can shed some light on.
I am trying to get data from an old SCSI HDD drive which was previously
installed in a windows 2000 box, and configured as a dynamic disk.
The current cofiguration i have setup is:
Primary master: - IDE drive with windows XP installed (Boots from this)
Adaptec SCSI host controller 2940 UW installed and old drive attatched to
this with LUN ID 0 and auto terminated.
This the process i have followed so far:
When i boot into windows XP i go into disk management and rescan disks i see
the foreign disk
I have imported the foreign disk, which showed there no error when importing
and creating the disk group.
Once completed it shows the disk with a drive letter but it shows Online
(with errors)

From MS KB articles and googling this can occur due to a controller, cabling
or drive error.
I know the controller works and cable works as i have used this in another
server. Is anyone aware of any other way i can sucessfully get this disk
online, or any tools i can use to verifying the disk is ok, without
destroying the data?

I would image the drive with Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost or something
similar before doing anything. Can you see any files on the drive? Was the
drive part of a RAID array or mirror? Have you tried chkdsk? Auto
termination often causes problems. Do you have an active terminator you can
try? If not try setting the terminator jumper on the drive. Do not set the
drive to supply termination voltage.

Thanks for the reply.
I have tryed using ghost8 to take an image, but after i select the drive for
ghosting i get a bad block error and cant proceed any further. I have also
tryed several other ghosting tools and they all give me a block error.
The Seagate drive i have for some reason does not support self termination.
I am going to try another cable.
I dont think it had a RAID setup, as when i tryed importing the drive there
was no data inconsistenceies, which i would of thought would represent a RAID
setup.
I have not tryed a chdsk, if possible, i will try running this in recovery
console, as i cannot access the drive in windows.
I am starting to get to the point where i think it is a physical problem
with the disk. I hope he had a mirror setup so i can maybe try and get the
data from the second drive.

It does sound like a bad drive. I would still try to set the termination
physically. Termination problems can cause all sorts of weird errors.
Perhaps if you have a drive that can be set for self termination put it on
the end of the cable and the questionable drive in the middle. Make sure the
controller is also set for termination. Another possibilty is installing the
exact same setup, controller, cable, and drives that were used in the other
computer.

Whatever you do, do not run chkdsk except as a very last resort if you don't
have an image. Chkdsk could cause more problems.
