I am having a very similar problem. I have connected a laptop running
Windows 95 to a desktop running Windows XP. Connection via RS232C RadioShack Cable, DB9 connectors on both ends to 9 pin serial ports on both computers. I used the XP File Transfer Wizard. I get the exact same results you do. Let me know if you get a solution and I will do the same.
