I just got a new printer, an HP LJ1020, which (alas) is not supported by my
Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition. I'm trying to sign up with HP for driver updates that they promise to notify my about but don't know whether to sign up for Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Professional x64. Whatever advice you can give is appreciated. The only information I get when I go to System Information on my Dell Inspiron 6000 is that it's running Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2. I may be dim, but I still don't know whether that's 64-bit. |

The WinXP drivers for that printer are already readily available on HP's web site: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/...isplay=drivers Simply enter "laserjet 1020" in the search field and click the little button with the chevrons. > The only information I get when I go to System Information on my Dell > Inspiron 6000 is that it's running Windows XP Media Center Edition Version > 2002 Service Pack 2. Any device drivers that work on WinXP Home or the 32-bit version of WinXP Pro should work on WinXP MCE. WinXP Media Center Edition is a _superset_ (iow, it does _everything_ WinXP Pro can do (except join a domain), plus contains additional multi-media features) of WinXP Pro. Dear Bruce,
Many thanks for your prompt help. The 1020 did come with a disk, but when I was running the installation program I got a stern Windows warning that the device or the software had not been Windows approved and so might not operate correctly. I assumed this was because it didn't have the right drivers but didn't know that for sure and nothing in HP forums seemed to address this issue. I did find there that the 1020 was not supported by 64-bit XP and that they were working on providing a driver for it so I thought this might be the problem. Maybe I'll just try again, as well as looking at the hp forum you directed me too. If all your getting is a warning that the device or the software had not
been Windows approved and so might not operate correctly your probably find there win2k drivers and will work with no problems at all. I have a few pieces of hardware that do the same when i install them on a fresh install, I've had no ill effect at all from clicking continue anyway. If worse comes to worse just SR (system Restore) back to before the install. Good luck Mike holeinhead wrote: > Dear Bruce, > Many thanks for your prompt help. > > The 1020 did come with a disk, but when I was running the installation > program I got a stern Windows warning that the device or the software had not > been Windows approved and so might not operate correctly. Actually, all that warning means is that HP didn't hadn't sent the drivers to Microsoft (and paid Microsoft) for testing, so that Microsoft would grant their "seal of approval." You'll find a great many device drivers cause this same, unnecessarily alarmist and often misleading "warning" to appear. -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html You can have peace.
