Default Unable to hear system sounds

Hello,

I suddenly am unable to hear system sounds on my pc, I could hear them
a couple of days ago when I last used my pc. I can hear music files,
CD's, movie sounds (.avi and .mpg played through realplayer) and sounds
on some games (e.g Doom 3 is fine but with PSI Ops I can hear nothing).
I hear nothing when I go to Sounds in control panel and play a system
sound.

I have checked that nothing is muted, checked all cabling and
connections, uninstalled and re-installed the sound device (I
uninstalled and rebooted, windows detected the "new" device and
installed it fine).

I am at my wits end trying to figure this out and would very much
appreciate any suggestions!!

I am using Win XP pro.

Thanks,

Bob.
