Default Backup utility not working - or is it me?

Help - I took the advice from an MVPer and downloaded the backup utility
because I don't have access to the original XP software. However, I am
attempting to backup to a DVD and I get the error message:The backup file
name could not be used D:\ backup.bkf Please ensure it is a valid path and
that you have suffcient access".
Can I backup directly to a DVD or do I have to create a backup file first?
If not please give me some advice. I followed the step-by-step and still get
the same message.

ntbackup.exe does not allow backing up directly to CD.

From X:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP\README.TXT

[[NTBackup Backup/Restore and ASR release notes
2. Backup to CDRW

If you decide to backup to a CDRW, you cannot target that device directly.
You must create a backup set of 650MB or less and backup to a file. After
the file is complete, copy the file to the CDRW.]]
