Default Recording onto DVD

I have a DVD drive that records -R and +R format. It plays DVDs ok but I
cannot record onto DVD.

When no disk is present the drive is shown as a DVD-RW drive. However, when
I insert a DVD-R disk it shows up as a CD drive with no capacity. My backup
is on external HD drives, so I have not tried to record to DVD, but now I
would like to record some files onto DVD.

I am running XP with latest additions. The same problem occurs on my
laptop, which also has a DVD-RW drive.

What am I missing? How can I record onto DVD?

What software are you using to record DVDs?

I was expecting that XP would handle it. From what you say I presume that
this is not the case.

In view of this I have just this minute purchased Nero 7.

Thank you

XP doesn't record to DVD's natively. You'll need third-party stuff - like
Nero - for that.

If you had told me that you were using 'X' brand of software I would have
suggested you try the software's technical support. Many of the programs
offer an active user community forum, where sharp folks who really know the
software volunteer their knowledge and experience.
