Default Sign In problem with MSN Messenger 7.5 (Build 7.5.0311)

I cannot sign in on MSN messenger 7.5 after doing an upgrade of
aforementioned application.
I signed on early in the morning to MSN Messenger 7.5 and got a pop-up
indicating that there was newer version. I proceeded in updating my version
and since than I am not able to sign in.
I am told I either have no internet connection (wrong! I am connected!) or
it is my firewall blocking it (error code 81000306). I use Norton Internet
Security and the firewall setting for MSN messenger says Permit All!

By troubleshooting my MSN Messenger by going to the menu option:
Tools>Options> Connection, I get the message: "You are currently NOT
connected to .NET Messenger Service"
I checked the Service Status on the sign on screen and get the message " All
systems are stable and running".
I also started the MSN Messenger Troublesooter and get the message: "Default
gateway appears to be offline".

I hope someone can help me sort this out! Thanks.

PS I have also noticed that I cannot sign in on MSN explorer. Internet
explorer works fine, but the sign in screen on msn explorer just stays
permanently on the flying butterfly, and after a while I get the message
that I cannot sign in and have to check my internet connection etc...

Greetings,

Norton may just not be recognizing the new version. Remove it from the Program Control List
and then readd it by using the Add dialog.

Thanks for you prompt rresponse, however I am not sure of understanding your
explanation:
You want me to go in Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs; than remove the msn
application and than reinstall it?

If not could you please explain me what you meant?

Hi,

No, within the Norton Internet Security Firewall, you will find a Program Control List which
lists the Programs that the firewall is allowing or blocking. More specifically this can
usually be found by double-clicking the Norton icon in the notification area and clicking the
Configure button, and then Programs.

I've been having for three weeks the same problem, I use the Windows
firewall.

When this started I noticed that some days I can use some file sharing
programs, but IE and Messenger and other programs I use for trading FX
using port 80 will not work, and MSN Messenger give me the same errors
Alton have and when IE works the other programs will not, however, Skype and
Yahoo Messenger have no problem.

Hi,

The Windows Firewall can't block Messenger as it only blocks incoming connections whereas
Messenger (to at least connect and chat) requires only outgoing connections.
