Default Help! - Messenger Hijack?

My brother has just found that one of his friends has received an insulting
message supposedly from him. He is adamant it was not sent by him and he
suspects that someone has hijacked his messenger account. Is this possible?
How can he stop someone from doing this?

The recipient of the message is very distraught.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings Andrew,

Well there are a lot of possibilities here; he should change his password at least:
