DVD discs that will play in standalone DVD players must be recorded using a
strict standard, the video is in a specialized MPEG-2 format and the audio
is in a special format also.

You *MUST* use a DVD authoring program to make compatible DVDs. While there
are DVD players that will play .AVI and DIVX files, your DVD player is
probably only capable of playing a standard DVD disc.

Sonic MyDVD and Roxio Disc Creator, and Nero Vision Express are three very
popular programs for authoring DVDs.

I personally purchased a Philips DVP-642; it plays DVDs, MP3, JPEG, MPG,
..AVI and DivX encoded files, and just about any other format you can throw
at it.
