I have exactly the same problem: (translated from German, my laptop is german)
my driver is legacy-video capture (sounds like the microsoft standard?)
"driver for WDM-Video for Windows (win32)"
driver instance: ROOT\MEDIA\MS_MMVCD
(my laptop has XP is 6 months old)

does that make sense ? (problem is preview does not work, capture is ok)

I found a device in available devices:
713x BDA Analog Capture
(but I could not find where I can get more information about it ...)

sorry, are you saying you are not able to preview on the screen while
moviemaker captures from your camcorder, but the capture works anyway ? did
you see the checkbox that to turn off/on video preview while capturing ??

That sounds like a good solution, but in my german version I cannot find
this checkbox. Please give me a hint where is this checkbox ??
(I see only 3 checkboxes on the capture screen: make clips / switch off
sound / time limit)
