Default capture device error

When clicking on capture from video device, I get 2 error messages. The 1st
tells me that the device is in use and the 2nd tells me that the video device
cannot be used at this time because there has been an error when starting the
device. I'm using the s-video in on a NVIDIA tv tuner card connected to a
digital video camera. I follwed the knowledge base advice about disabling the
TV services in the media center but still get the error. I can use a firewire
cable from the camer to the PC without any problem but have a need to also
use the s-video connection for other video sources. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

NVIDIA itself seems to always be an issue for one. Check their website for
updated drivers.
WMM also doesn't work well this way. Since you have a digital video camera
you likely have a firewire port on it so your best bet is to purchase a
firewire port expansion card for your computer (unless it already has one)
and a firewire cable. Connect and import via firewire and you will get the
best results.

I would like the ability to edit videos from VCR tapes. I was able to do this
with my old system running a AGP ATI All in Wonder Pro video card.

I already have the firewire cable to capture the video from the digital
video camera.

I missed the part about you having a firewire connection in the original
post, was in too much of a hurry reading it I guess. Does your camera have
inputs to allow for digital pass-through? Some do and some don't but if
yours does your best bet is to connect the VCR through the digital camera.
If not then I would recommend purchasing a pass-through device like a dazzle
80 or something of that sort to connect the VCR to. Otherwise you need
software that will capture the analog signal, some probably came with the
computer if it has a capture device, and capture using that then import to
WMM.

My camera does not offer the pass through capabilities. I already have
different software programs that allow me to capture video and they give me
the same error as WMM.

Well then my next thought would be either a bad card or a bad cable.
Do you have access to another camera, maybe from a friend, that you can try
to see if you get the same problem? Also maybe hooking your camera to
somebody else's computer to see if it works that way?

If i have the s-video cable plugged into the tv tuner card I get the same
error message if the other end is connected to the camera or to the VCR or
not connected to anything. I have tried 3 different s-video cables getting
the same result. I tried contacting NVIDIA but I need the serial number off
the card. I should also mention this PC is less than 2 weeks old and the
Company I purchased it from tell's me it should work.

They can tell you it should work all they want. I would take it back to
where you bought it and challenge them to make it work since it really
sounds like a bad card.

Thanks for your replies Wojo. I'm waiting on a response from the card mfg. to
see what they have to say. I'll update this post when I receive more info. It
may help someone else with a NVIDIA TV tuner card down the road.
