I have just finished editing my home movie and when I attempt to save the
movie file as DV-AVI it sais estimated space required 35598.75MB. Does this
equate to nearly 36 GB's. I was advised to save it as DV-AVI for the best
quality. What should i do now. I have not yet saved it. This file if i am
correct in my calculations would be about 8 DVD's. Oh Sxxt!! What should I
do now.

DV-AVI is about 13 GB per hour... so if your movie is almost 3 hours, then
the figures are right.

But the DV-AVI file doesn't go to the DVD.... your DVD software uses it as
an input file and makes the needed MPEG-2 files for the disc.... if you use
really high compression settings for the MPEG-2 file, it might fit.

Hi PapaJohn,

Thankyou very much for your quick reply, much appreciated. I am using Sonic
MyDVD software. When i am about to burn to DVD there is no option to change
compression settings only to click on the BURN button!

What should I do?

The starter versions of MyDVD are limited to an hour... the higher level
versions such as the v6.1 MyDVD Deluxe I'm using has these quality choices:

Fit-to-DVD
High Quality
Standard Play
Long Play
Extended Play - about 150 minutes... yours still might not fit...

I limit my DVDs to about an hour.... from reading, I understand that a 2
hour video on one would only show little loss of quality, but beyond that it
would go downhill noticeably...

As it depends a lot on your content, you would need to test and assess it
for your needs.

If i split the movie, then save it. Will i still be able to attempt to burn
it as one file with sonic.
I am having a real problem at the mo as I have made numerous attmepts to
save the file and it keeps failing. If I split it will this help. How do
you split it to make two projects??

no, if you split the movie, it'll be two files for your DVD software.... but
you can easily put two big clips together into one file using Movie Maker to
render it again from the two big clips...

splitting a project helps if it's too complex to render with your current
memory and settings.

my newsletter #8 was about splitting complex projects... it's online, with a
link on the bottom of the Problem Solving > Can't Save a Movie page of my
