Default What's the downside of no MPEG2 import?

First--I'm a newbie. Kind of tripped over WMM2, started playing with it
(lost a few hours of sleep and VOILA! a 3 minute movie with my audience
asking "ohhhh, is that all?")

But I have been trying out software that will edit from the VOB, as I have
several DVD's as source files. The output of this program is usually an MPEG
that, unless I use mpeg1, I think MM want import (will MS ever 'fix' this?)
So I understand I have to convert to an AVI file, which are huge files, are
they not? So I am thinking I now have a half project in another editor with
mpeg files, and I have the converted AVI files (which, if you don't do right,
you get no sound, or multiple clips, etc. ) So I am going to run into space
issues eventually.

But, is AVI superior to the mpeg formats for editing and using in movie
making? Can someone suggest software like WMM that will take mpegs and make
movies? Don't get me wrong, I really like MM but I am currently surveying
what's out there? Or in your experience, do you run into file conversion
issues no matter what, so get used to it? AVI is OK?

I will get the editing and converting and MM down, just asking for input.

You're off and running well...

Check out www.womble.com for direct editing of MPEG-2 files. I haven't used
it but think highly of someone who is reporting success with it.

.... and yes, you'll be into challenges no matter what editor....
